Are you awake?
Have you had such a good nights sleep lately, that when you wake you’re ready for your day? You’re not yawning, sleepy, grumpy or hitting the snooze button? If so, you’re probably on track with good sleeping behaviors. If not, some recent research on sleep deprivation should interest you. And, I’ve got an easy sleep quiz to help you recognize the gaps and track your progress.
Here’s the big why:
Sleepy people get less done, have a more negative outlook and struggle more with weight loss compared to those getting adequate sleep.
In a 2020 research project, subjects slept 5 hours per night, compared to a normal 7-8 hours, for 5 consecutive days. Researchers measured their perception of positive and neutral images to measure their emotional outlook. Turns out, the participants viewed the images in a more negative way, while the negative image response was unchanged. The conclusions extrapolate to the strain on our outlook, creating a negative emotional bias. Given the prevalence of sleep deprivation in most adults, it’s easy to see how the world looks a little darker.
Now, let’s pretend you’re not getting enough sleep. How easy is it to be irritated with small things during your day, snap at your spouse and kids, get into an argument and then sit down to dinner, or maybe, after dinner, head back to the freezer for dessert? It may be unclear that a lack of sleep is connected to a lack of connection to your people, a lack of eating awareness, overeating or other behaviors, but it’s likely a root cause.
Let’s take a quiz and find out whether we consistently live in a sleepy state and what to do about it if we are!
Where do we go from here? Well, conveniently, there’s a lot we can do to influence how well we sleep, and with those choices, also comes the ability to increase the amount of sleep. There are always times when wakefulness is not completely in your hands, like with small children, or teenagers, or adult children 😉 (kidding!). But just like creating eating habits you can sustain, a sleeping routine that gives you allowances to be your best, is within your reach. Download the graphic below to start implementing changes now for a good night’s rest in the future.
